In a press conference held in recent minutes, the Spaniard announced her retirement

The news from her press conference had already made it clear what was about to happen: Grabine Muguruza has officially retired from tennis.

The very strong and beautiful Spanish tennis player had called a press conference for this afternoon, in which she would explain her important decision. A decision that does not come unexpectedly, considering what has happened in recent months.

Garbine had decided to take a break from tennis in February 2023 and, now, after 14 months away from the courts, Garbine has said goodbye to tennis.

In her career she has won 10 titles, including the Roland Garros 2016 and Wimbledon 2017 (beating Serena and Venus Williams, respectively), as well as the 2021 WTA Finals, losing the 2015 Wimbledon final to Serena and the 2020 Australian Open final to Sofia Kenin

In an interview with Women’s Health last year, Garbine talked about her break from tennis:

“Today I don’t feel like I want to go back to competition. I want to rest, be with my family and make up for lost time. I don’t go beyond what I’m doing today, in the present, and I don’t look beyond.

My body and my mind had I need this. By not competing I still keep fit, without always having to push myself to the limit. I go to the gym regularly, I love weight training, I do zumba, pilates, yoga, boxing.

I take this opportunity to give a chance to those things that I couldn’t give a chance to when I was on the circuit.

Tennis has no place in my routine. I am aware of my teammates, maybe I can play sometimes but for pure fun, without intensity. It doesn’t occupy my mind, my routine or my day, I’m taking a real break and keeping myself completely off the court.”
